The case for content filtering
The benefits of filtered Internet connectivity is already well made and backed up by seemingly endless reports, statistics and scare stories of businesses that failed to heed the warnings. Rather than just repeat these, let's assume that you have found your way here in order to take things a step further and are considering implementing some kind of web content filtering.Your primary motivation is likely to be one or more of the following, but please let us know if you have other reasons for using web filtering so that we can add it to our list:
User Protection
Protection of minors and vulnerable users from un-planned, un-wanted and un-desirable web content. Essential for open access in public buildings, schools and colleges.
Lost Productivity
Manage Internet usage by blocking access from work to blatantly unproductive, recreational (or worse) web sites.
Legal Issues
Failure to demonstrate some degree of control or reasonable care over web access at work may not only be expensive in terms of lost productivity but can, in our increasingly litigious society, lead to expensive litigation.
Network Security
Careless surfing around sites of dubious origin and with dubious intentions can sometimes be more than just annoying (browser farms), perhaps leading to machine corruption (ping of death, malicious plug-in's) and in extreme circumstances network failure.
Adverse publicity
Don't let the most effective publicity your organisation has ever produced be concerned with your staff's anti-social Internet surfing habits.
What is Cleanfeed and how does it differ from the competition?
Cleanfeed is based on pass-through filtering technology, the most accurate, reliable and scalable method of Internet filtering. Pass-through filtering requires all requests for web pages to pass through an Internet control point such as a proxy server or cache. The Cleanfeed control point is a massively paralleled proxy/cache that checks each request to determine whether it should be allowed or denied. All responses are logged for additional security.Cleanfeed filters Internet content by working in conjunction with the Cleanfeed Master Database of classified Internet domains. These are organised into 44 categories ranging from adult/sexually explicit to shopping. Of the 44 classifications we currently block web sites belonging to the following 12:
| Category Number | Category Description |
| 1 | Adult/Sexually Explicit |
| 3 | Remote Proxies |
| 7 | Criminal Skills |
| 8 | Drugs Alcohol and Tobacco |
| 12 | Gambling |
| 14 | Glamour & Intimate Apparel |
| 16 | Hacking |
| 17 | Hate speech |
| 38 | Usenet News |
| 39 | Violence |
| 40 | Weapons |
| 43 | Active Filter |
New sites are continuously added to the database using a combination of advanced automated collection and human classification techniques, the most important of which being the feedback from our customers.
Please take a moment to view the statistics page and the list of recently added domains to see how up to date central policy management can be. Use our site-test tool to find out how your own domain's are classified and, if necessary, suggest a more appropriate one.
Who can use Cleanfeed ?
In short, practically anybody with an Internet connection can connect to the Cleanfeed proxies by opening a Cleanfeed account and then modifying the browser attributes of their client machines or the network gateway to use a proxy server rather than make direct http requests. This 'manual' configuration is appropriate for many applications where LAN's connect via a controlled gateway or desktop configurations are locked down, and allows administrators to start receiving filtered web content within a matter of minutes. To benefit fully from Cleanfeed's transparent proxy capability, enhanced security, web acceleration, not to mention the most flexible and reliable Internet available anywhere, it is recommended that Cleanfeed is delivered as part of an inclusive ADSL package. Cleanfeed is available as a free-of-charge, order-time option on any of Legend Internet's range of ADSL connectivity products... just choose a bandwidth option, specify Cleanfeed and deliver pre-filtered & accelerated web content to all of your sensitive sites... no hassle, no administration overhead, no cost, no risk, no objectionable material.
